The Majors
Students at Arts and Sciences begin the Majors Program in fifth grade. Up until this point, all students have participated in the seven arts and science classes each week with the majors teachers. It is through this arts-immersion period that a student is able to discover their interests and talents, and majors teachers are able to assess where a student will be most successful. Once a student is placed into a major, they will remain in that major until graduation.
Students are selected for a major based on the following:
- Participation in the class
- Level of interest and dedication (for some majors it is required to attend after school performances)
- Attendance and preparedness (some majors require special uniforms be worn each day, such as the Ballet Major)
- Efforts demonstrated to learn and develop the necessary skills required of that major
The Majors Program is comprised of Level I (5th and 6th grade students) and Level II (7th and 8th grade students). All majors students spend 80 minutes in their major every school day.
